DEFINITION
The practice of building housing with 3D offsite manufactured building products. Specifically, by fabricating and assembling all discipline’s contributions into one product, and installing the product as a complete home solution.
EXAMPLES
Single-wide and Double-wide Mobile Homes are the most common form of Manufactured Housing.
USAGE
“It’s easy to generalize any apartment building as a stack of dwelling units, but when designers plan the use of modular kitchens and bathrooms, they engage in modular housing practices.”
ISSUES
The form and assemblies of US housing is traditionally governed by local building codes (to respond to local issues of climate, earthquake, or other pressure). Since Manufactured Housing products may be deployed in a variety of jurisdictions, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) traditionally governs the design and inspection of manufactured housing.
